Kinect-powered live action Asteroids makes you the spaceship | Games | Geek.com

Asteroids

Imagine playing Asteroids on a 150-foot surface with your body and a smartphone as the controls. This incredible invention is real, and if Two Bit Circus has anything to say about it will be part of a travelling STEAM Carnival soon.

Anyone who has lost a few hours of their day to some of the classic Atari games knows that nostalgic feeling you get when you see the game somewhere. Maybe an homage to the game is setup in decal form on someone’s wall, or you stumble across the game in one of those controller 10-pack game sets, but the feeling is the same every time. Two Bit Circus has taken that feeling and amplified it with their new Human Asteroids game, which puts the game on a massive floor space for you to scoot around and play yourself.

With a Kinect sensor mounted up high and a projector to paint the game on the floor, the use assumes the mantle of Player 1 in a unique way. With smartphone in hand, the game uses the direction you are facing as the direction to point the ship. You push fire on the smartphone, and the rest is Asteroids as you remember it. Break the big green things into little green things, and don’t let any of them crash into you. There doesn’t seem to be an consequences to letting the asteroids hit you, just the ship floating in front of you.

This is all part of what is being called the STEAM Carnival, which is currently a Kickstarter project to take cool things like this game and make them part of an actual roaming carnival. This State Fair style carnival will focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the hopes that they will inspire more children to become interested in those fields as career choices.

If Human Asteroids is an example of what to expect, the rest can only be amazing.
